Why Should You Support Our Work?

We work hard to secure funding from multiple sources, with collaborators in the USA and abroad. You may click here to read our Spring 2026 report on our funding efforts. What follows is a summary of the reasons already highlighted in that report for you to consider supporting our work.

We Empower Discoveries at the Intersection of Biology and Health

The Phyloinformatics Lab at UNC Charlotte operates at the critical crossroads of evolutionary biology, machine learning, and public health. We use computational science to address some of the world’s most urgent challenges—from preparing for the next viral pandemic and combating antibiotic-resistant parasites to discovering novel biomaterials that could revolutionize regenerative medicine. By decoding the evolutionary history of life, we are actively building the computational infrastructure needed for global health security and biomedical innovation.

Our Lab Is A Proven Engine for Global Innovation

When you support our lab, you invest in a highly collaborative research group that has already built a network spanning four continents. In just three years, our work has resulted in peer-reviewed publications in high-impact journals, successful patent applications, and critical contributions to national biodefense initiatives. Because our research is heavily computational, our lab is uniquely positioned to make disproportionately large, high-impact contributions to science when we are properly resourced.

We Are Training Tomorrow’s Scientific Leaders

Above all, your generosity directly fuels our students’ success, which we consider our most important metric. We have cultivated a rigorous and supportive environment where every Ph.D. student who has applied for an internal university fellowship has successfully secured one. By contributing to our mission, you are not just funding research; you are empowering a diverse cohort of undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral researchers to cross disciplinary boundaries, win competitive awards, and lead the future of computational biology.

Governmental Investment in Research is Fundamental

Thank you for reading this far and for considering supporting our work. While private generosity is invaluable, it does not replace our fundamental reliance on federal agencies like the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health. We also depend heavily on these public funds. They are the bedrock of scientific infrastructure in the United States, uniquely championing new discoveries and expanding the horizons of human knowledge through pure scientific inquiry, independent of private organizations’ interests.
